What Are Diamond Shapes, and How Many Are There?

A diamond shape is the outline of the stone seen from above (face-up). The diamond trade uses 10 standard shapes: round, oval, pear, cushion, princess, emerald, marquise, radiant, asscher and heart. Each one sparkles differently and looks a different size, even at the same carat weight.

People often confuse "shape" with "Cut" in the 4Cs. Cut in the 4Cs is a grade for cutting quality — proportions, symmetry and polish — and GIA issues a full cut grade only for round diamonds. Shape is simply the outline: an oval can be cut well or badly. See our 4C guide for more on cut grades.

Shapes fall into two cutting families: brilliant cuts, with triangular and kite-shaped facets built for sparkle (round, oval, pear, cushion, princess, marquise, radiant, heart), and step cuts, with long parallel facets like a staircase (emerald, asscher) that give broad flashes of light rather than glitter. This guide was updated 4 October 2026.

The 10 Diamond Shapes Compared: Sparkle and Face-Up Size

The table compares all 10 shapes at 1 carat, with approximate face-up dimensions in millimetres for standard proportions — real stones vary with depth and length-to-width ratio. The price tendency versus a round of the same 4C grade is a general market tendency, not a ZILVY selling price.

Which Diamond Shape Sparkles the Most?

The round brilliant sparkles the most. Its 57-58 facets are angled to send the most incoming light back up through the top. Next come radiant and cushion, which combine brilliant faceting with cornered outlines for intense, crushed-ice sparkle.

Elongated shapes — oval, pear, marquise and heart — also sparkle well, but can show a bow-tie effect: a dark, bow-shaped band across the middle when viewed from above. How strong it looks depends on the cutting proportions, so view the actual stone or a video before deciding.

Emerald and asscher cuts are not built for glitter. They give *broad flashes of light — the hall of mirrors look* — that feel calm and vintage-luxurious. Their open table also shows inclusions more clearly than other shapes, so aim for VS clarity or higher.

Which Diamond Shape Suits You? How to Choose a Ring Shape

Choosing a ring shape comes down to three things: how much sparkle you want, your finger shape and how you wear rings day to day. Elongated shapes make fingers look longer and slimmer, square shapes read as modern, and pointed shapes such as pear and marquise need prongs or a rim protecting the tips to reduce the risk of chipping.

The table below sums up who each shape suits and what to watch for. Pair it with your setting choice — a 6-prong Tiffany setting suits round diamonds best, while side stones help an elongated centre stone stand out.

Why Do Pear, Oval and Marquise Diamonds Look Bigger Than Round?

Elongated diamonds spread their weight along their length and sit shallower than a round, so more face-up area shows at the same weight. A 1 carat marquise, for example, runs about 10mm long, while a 1 carat round is only about 6.5mm across — which is why pear and oval rings are popular with anyone who wants a bigger-looking ring without adding carat weight.

Elongated shapes also come in different length-to-width ratios. Popular ovals sit around 1.35-1.50 and pears around 1.50-1.75. The longer the ratio, the bigger and slimmer the stone looks — but go too long and it looks thin, with a stronger bow-tie risk.

Which Diamond Shapes Does ZILVY Offer?

Most of the ZILVY ring catalog uses round D color diamonds with a 3EX cut — across Tiffany-setting solitaires, side-stone rings, halo rings and men's rings — because round sparkles the most and suits every setting. There are also a few women's designs with an oval, emerald-cut or marquise centre stone paired with pear-shaped side diamonds (catalog data updated 4 Oct 2026).

If you want a shape you do not see in the catalog, such as princess, cushion or asscher, message LINE @zilvy to ask what is possible for your spec — the team will suggest a setting that suits that shape.

FAQ

How is diamond shape different from Cut in the 4Cs?

Shape is the outline seen from above — round, oval, pear and so on. Cut in the 4Cs is a grade for cutting quality (proportions, symmetry, polish). Two diamonds of the same shape can earn different cut grades.

Which diamond shape sparkles the most?

The round brilliant sparkles the most, with 57-58 facets designed to return the most light upward. Radiant and cushion come next.

Which diamond shape looks biggest per carat?

Marquise looks the biggest per carat (about 10mm long at 1ct), followed by pear and oval. Asscher, princess and cushion often look smaller than a round of the same weight.

Why are round diamonds more expensive than other shapes at the same grade?

Cutting a round wastes the most rough diamond, and it is the most in-demand shape. Other shapes at the same 4C grade therefore usually cost less per carat.

Can I wear a pear-shaped diamond ring every day?

Yes, but the pointed tip chips more easily than a round if knocked. Choose a setting with a prong or rim protecting the tip, and take the ring off for heavy work.

Which diamond shapes does ZILVY offer?

Most ZILVY rings use round D color diamonds with a 3EX cut, plus a few designs with oval, emerald-cut and marquise-with-pear stones. Ask LINE @zilvy about other shapes.
