Ring Size Guide: How to Measure + Thai, US & EU Size Chart

How to measure ring size — Thai, US and EU ring size chart

What is ring size, and how do you measure it? 3 easy home methods, plus a Thai/EU, US and UK ring size chart from 44-70mm, based on ISO 8653 standards.

What Is Ring Size, and What Does It Measure?

Ring size is the circumference of your finger, measured in millimetres — not the diameter of your finger or the band. Under the international ISO 8653 standard and the system Thai jewellers use, ring size is mostly just the circumference number itself: size 50 means a finger circumference of about 50mm. US sizing runs on a separate 1-13 scale that steps in quarters.

Because circumference and diameter relate through pi (circumference = diameter × π), Thai/EU sizes rise by about one number for every 1mm added to the circumference, while US sizes, which step in quarters, move one notch for roughly every 0.6mm gained. That difference in units is why ring sizes cannot be converted across countries by simple arithmetic — you always need to go back to the circumference or diameter.

At ZILVY we measure ring size the same way, by circumference in millimetres. Our team measures you free at the Ratchapruk showroom in Bangkok before production starts on any ring. If a showroom visit is not convenient, message LINE @zilvy to ask how to measure your own ring size or to get help before you order.

Ring Size Conversion Chart: Thai / US / EU / UK / Diameter

The chart below matches finger circumference (mm) to Thai/EU, US and UK ring sizes, based on the ISO 8653 standard and common US sizing, from a 44mm to 70mm circumference in 2mm steps. Measure your own circumference with a tape or string, then find the closest row. The diameter column is calculated as circumference divided by pi (π).

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home (3 Methods)

Measuring your own ring size at home is not complicated and needs no special tools. These three methods give similar results — pick whichever is most convenient, then match the number against the chart above.

  • Wrap paper or string around the base of your finger — cut a thin strip, wrap it around the exact spot where the ring will sit, mark where the ends meet, then measure that length in millimetres with a ruler. That number is your finger circumference — match it straight against the chart above.
  • Measure the inner diameter of a ring that already fits — lay a ring you already wear comfortably flat on a ruler, measure straight across the inside from edge to edge through the centre, in millimetres, and match it against the diameter column in the chart.
  • *Borrow a ring sizer or get measured in-store* — a graduated ring sizer set is the most accurate option since it is worn directly on the finger. If you do not have one, the ZILVY showroom measures your ring size free before production.

Tips for a More Accurate Measurement

  • Measure in the evening or at normal room temperature — fingers tend to swell in the afternoon, in hot weather, or after exercise.
  • Knuckles are usually wider than the base of the finger — if yours is noticeably wider, size up slightly so the ring clears it comfortably.
  • Wide bands (6mm and up) usually need about 0.5-1 size larger than a thin band, since more surface area touches the finger.
  • Measure 2-3 times on different days or times, then use the middle value to reduce error.

What Are Common Ring Sizes for Women and Men?

Actual ring size depends mostly on individual finger shape, but based on common sizes in Thailand, women's ring sizes mostly fall around 48-54mm and men's around 56-64mm. The table below breaks this down by finger — these are rough, common ranges only, not a fixed number for everyone.

Measured Wrong? Can a Diamond Ring Be Resized, and By How Much?

A plain-band or single-prong solitaire ring usually resizes by about ±1-2 sizes without seriously weakening the setting, depending on the band thickness and design.

A full-eternity diamond row ring is much harder to resize, since metal carrying set diamonds has to be cut away. A tension setting, which holds the stone purely with the metal's own squeeze, is close to impossible to resize — the whole band is engineered for one exact diameter. See our diamond row rings guide and Tiffany setting guide for more on each setting type.

At ZILVY we always recommend measuring carefully before production, since every ring is made to order for the size you give us — no resizing needed afterward. Our team measures free in the showroom, and every ring still includes one free resize after delivery in case of a small mismatch.

Planning a Surprise Proposal? How to Find Her Ring Size Without Asking

If you are planning a surprise proposal, asking her ring size outright gives the game away. Here are ways to work around that.

  • Borrow a ring she wears on the same finger (the right ring finger, if she is not already engaged) and measure its inner diameter against the chart above.
  • Ask a close friend or family member who already knows her ring size, or who has shopped for rings with her before.
  • Compare it against your own ring by trying her ring on your finger and judging roughly how much looser or tighter it is than a size you already know.
  • Pick a design that resizes easily, such as a plain-band solitaire, so a slightly wrong guess is easy to fix after the proposal.

FAQ

What US size is Thai/EU size 52?

Thai/EU size 52 converts to about US size 6 (roughly a 16.6mm diameter). See the full conversion chart above for other sizes.

Is measuring with string or paper accurate?

Reasonably accurate if done correctly and the string is not stretched, but expect about ±0.5-1mm of error. Measure 2-3 times, or let the ZILVY team measure you free in the showroom for the most accurate result.

When do fingers swell, and why does it matter?

Fingers tend to swell in the afternoon and evening, in hot weather, after exercise, or after a salty meal. Measure in the morning or whenever your fingers are not swollen for the truest size.

Do couple rings need separate sizing?

Yes, always measure both people separately — partners rarely share the same ring size. Try both rings on together before production starts, too.

Where do men's ring sizes typically start?

Most men's ring sizes start around 56mm, with 56-64mm being the common range — but this varies with each person's actual finger shape.

How many times can a ring be resized?

A plain band typically resizes about ±1-2 sizes per adjustment without seriously weakening the setting. At ZILVY, every ring includes one free resize after delivery. Full-eternity diamond rows and tension settings are far harder to resize, since their structure is built for one exact size.
